IKF ROAD RACE GRAND NATIONALS CLOSING IN FOR PORTLAND KARTING ASSOCIATION
Organization making final preparations for biggest IKF road race event of the year.
PORTLAND, OR (July 2, 2008) - The final planning phases are just about wrapped up as the Portland Karting Association (PKA) prepares for the International Kart Federation Road Race Grand Nationals at the Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon. The July 15-18 event will feature the best road racers from the Western half of the United States , along with many crossovers from the east-side of the Mississippi , ensuring that the competition will be stiff. The event currently enjoys over 220 pre-entries, which should eclipse the total count for the 2007 event held in Reno , Nevada once the final numbers are collected. The Super Stock CR125 division, along with the World Formula and TaG classes, seem to be reaching the higher numbers for entries, with over 20 drivers expected in each class.
Part of that high number success comes from the new ‘Nifty Five-Fifty Deal’ that the PKA provided to anyone interested in entering the event. For $550, a driver could enter as many classes as they wanted for a flat fee of $550, excluding the two ‘Pro’ classes. The deal is truly a first in karting and has proven to be a successful option at that with numerous drivers taking full advantage.
There were no Junior divisions offered at last year’s edition of the IKF Road Race Grand Nationals, so that PKA is happy to have two of the docket for the 2008 event. The TaG Junior and Rotax Junior classes - run on separate days - will provide two opportunities for the drivers under 15-years of age to claim a prestigious Duffy after a day of competition at PIR .
Another new option that the PKA is providing at the end of the week is the ‘ET Racer’ class. Open to any kart that meets the current safety standards while utilizing any type of engine under the 220cc limit, drivers will race against the clock rather than each other. The revised ‘Run What Ya Brung’ type class for senior level drivers will award the best drivers who run consistent laps during the 30-minute race. Essentially, the PKA scoring staff will take your best lap in that race and project the number of laps you would complete at that pace in the allotted time. The driver with the best percentage after factoring the actual distance traveled will be the class winner.
“We are excited to offer this class for the first time in Grand Nationals history,” stated Michael Schorn of the Portland Karting Association. “It’s a great way for anyone with a kart or engine that does not have a class in IKF anymore to come back and enjoy racing again. It is growing in popularity with our regional events and we thought running it at the Grand Nationals would provide the racers just one more chance at tackling the PIR course.”
To continue with the ongoing hospitality, the PKA will be hosting a potluck dinner on Wednesday following the on-track action courtesy of the SPS Racing. PKA will provide the meat for the SPS crew to grill for all in attendance, with any side dishes welcome.
Hotel, restaurant, and local information can be found on PKA’s official Road Race Grand Nationals website - http://www.portlandkarting.com/2008%20Grands/2008RRGrandHome.htm
